AnoHana: The name of the flower is Menma

Fitting...

(EDIT: Ironically (I suppose), upon completing AnoHana’s season I found that YouTube had gone on a rampage and yanked most of the videos in this post from its “service”. Since blank black boxes are so annoying, I’ve removed them from this innocent post, and replaced them with… well, nothing. Season’s over; show’s ended; highly recommended and wonderful anime; nothing else to see here except for everything else there is here. In which case, happy reading :-P )

I just watched episode 9 of  Ano Hi Mita no Namae o Bokutachi Wa Mada Shiranai (aka We Still Don’t Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day; check out the ratings on that linked ANN page) and am compelled to force gently entice my Visitors who are into the slice-of-life and drama genres to check it out ASAP. It’s just that good… if you like that sort of thing. And I do :-P

(…YT snipped video…)

I love that song so much I could (and have!) play it repeatedly. That ED version is sung by the voice actresses Ai Kayano, Haruka Tomatsu, and Saori Hayami; there are at least a couple of other longer versions as well, by the J-pop bands ZONE and Scandal. You’ll probably see them here and there, most likely here *cough below cough* LOL Incidentally, view these vids right away, as Sony/Columbia (or whateverthefuck they’re calling themselves these days) are pulling them off of YouTube quickly. So get ‘em while they’re hot! Way to promote your show, suits :-<

It’s been awhile since I’ve watched an anime that I out-and-out loved through and through; probably not since Clannad/After Story and ef-a fairytale of the two. In anime terms, “love” is a very strong word and should only be used to describe a show that succeeds in reaching your heart, with characters you care deeply about. I’ve come across many many shows that I fully enjoyed and some masterpieces as well, but finding a series, OVA,  or movie with characters so rich in palpable feelings and …well… “human-ness” (with all its flaws) is a rare thing indeed. That they have fleshed-out backstories and motivations integral to the main story adds layer upon layer of discovery and delight (and dismay) in witnessing them develop as the series progresses.

I dislike telling too much about plots, preferring the Viewer discover these things for themselves. That precious element of delight is diminished when you know what’s coming or what to expect, and many of a story’s surprises are ruined along with the calculated expositional twists and pacing when spoilers are revealed. AnoHana is still doling out the revelations and backstories even at ep 9 and is likely to continue through to the end in the two to come. So I suppose you might add “Mystery” to its mish-mash of genres. There’s also a very definite and quite singular thread of a ”Supernatural” element as well…

(…YT snipped video…)

What is it about Menma which makes her so special? She’s adorable to be sure; the animation and direction definitely add a final and beautiful coating to this cute little flower. YMMV (of course) but for me it’s the core combination of youthful innocence and adolescent willfulness, unabashed clumsiness and serene grace, and a dogged determination to reach the end of her path, her story, her destiny. One that we all must deal with, but perhaps not in her own way as we each have our own way towards That End. She hasn’t accepted it yet, it seems, and neither has her friends…

(…YT snipped video…)

All six of the leads are carefully drawn and quite different from one another; seeing them as children in flashbacks and then as teens in the present reminds me of how much people can change over time, especially (formerly) close-knit friends like these. I really enjoy stories of companionship, love, and reflection; in fact, these are also central to UNBOUND which was written well before I was exposed to anime. Most of the favorite anime on my list are stories like these; I like stories in which the characters behave selflessly in spite of great adversity, care about others, and who Do the Right Thing despite the risk of losing it all. Bravery. Courage. Devotion. Love…

While in The Grand Scheme of Things the small stories of six individuals have no great (apparent) significance, but when viewed simply, by a human who can relate to the familiar elements and emotions the characters display in both their good and bad behavior, it becomes a Big Story in a small world, because it reflects who and how we are, and were, before we changed. Because Life is change; everything changes as does every one. It is a small world. The six gathered here in AnoHana played as children in their Secret Base, and drifted apart after a tragic accident, which we still haven’t been shown. When they meet up again (I’m assuming ten years later) they’ve become young adults and are still dealing with the baggage from that incident, along with the remnants of their childhood relationships with each other. How much has changed between them, and how will it affect them in the present, expecially Menma?

(..YT snipped video…)

Still two episodes to go, so we’ll see ;-)

Oh. I have one left to share, if you enjoyed the ED version of Secret Base at the top; here is Scandal’s live subtitled cover of ZONE’s original version, if I have the facts straight. Which, since I got the info off YouTube, is doubtful :-P Even though the lyrics were (apparently) written before the anime, they fit it so perfectly! Anyway, please enjoy it :-)

(EDIT: Well, that didn’t take long, did it? The f#<}!^$ Control Freaks do it again :-(   When I have time I’ll look for a suitable replacement using the same music if not video.)

(EDIT 2: The above Edit made obsolete due to aforementioned C.F.s doing it all over my AnoHana Post :-( )

(Therefore, EDIT 3: I scoured YT for an even better “Secret Base” version, and included it below!)

Thanks for reading and visiting; please feel free to leave your comments about this great show :-D

So, two episodes into AnoHana. It looks good. I don’t want to cast any critique on it because, as I said before, I’m in one of my “anime down times” lately and I know I can’t reflect honestly on it. Don’t know what it is about my mood swings… I can be passionate about something one day/week/month and then suddenly lose all interest in it the next.

In episode one I couldn’t get away from how much Anaru made me think of Saya Takagi from Highschool of the Dead.
    http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s352/mushianime/misc/sayatakagi.jpg
Just the way she was introduced in full-on tsundere mode, perhaps. Episode two managed to endear her to me a bit, and set her apart.

I can’t promise that I’ll rush to get all caught up on this series, but I shall endeavor to chip away at it here and there. Consequently, you’ll have to pardon me for skipping your videos.

Long as I’m here… gonna’ go OT and throw another old song at ya. You know I’m a Bubblegum Crisis fan, original series from the late 80′s, but had a remake in the late 90′s. Remake was very disappointing for fans, but the music was great. Here’s a tune that did an admirable job of throwing back to an older, gutsy, passionate sound. Single electric guitar with solo female voice.

Akira Sudou, a very appropriate (singing) voice for the angsty, loner Priss… seems I found a kindred spirit at youtube:

I finished AnoHana last night, and it was well worth the wait. A bit overwrought but still very convincing. Some very good acting by the cast too, esp Tomatsu as Anaru. Any flaws or plotholes were so minor as to not count against the top rating I give this show. Can’t wait to marathon it; that makes such a big difference in comparison to watching week-to-week! I think you’ll enjoy it in the end ;-)

As for skipping the videos… well, you might have noticed that YouTube has already pulled most of them for AnoHana, so there aren’t many left to skip LOL

    Mellow song, btw :-D

OMG… I’m in the middle of episode 3 of AnoHana and had to post a comment.

At the BBQ, when Poppo pulls the lid on his “keel”, Menma says, “It’s like puke” and then Poppo says, “Want to try frying it, like okonomiyaki?” I about fell out of my chair.

I’ve recently taken an interest in Japanese cooking and found this really amusing youtube channel called “cooking with dog” (notice the lady’s ‘cat paw’ cutting technique :) ). Here’s what real okonomiyaki is like… just so you know the implications of that scene.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeUHy0A1GF0

In other words, Poppo is saying, maybe we could just make a big pancake out of it. LMAO!

I just finished episode 5 and I’m really loving this series.

Forgive my random postings, but I can’t help but feel compelled to admonish Haruka Tomatsu and her treatment of Anaru. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of being a fanboy and thinking she’s so great because of “this and that”, or “oh just another tsundere.” But, honestly, I’m sensing such a genuine projection of character from her in this role that I can’t help but think how perfect she is in bringing this character to life.

Those subtle inflections at just the right moment and the ton of emotion that is conveyed with a simple breathy word, or even just the sound of a breath, sets her apart as one who is truly a master of her craft.

BTW, did you watch ‘Fractale’? Not sure if you included that in any reviews, as I don’t always catch everything here. But, I see it was directed my Yamamoto and I hold him in high regard, so… just wondering if you did give an opinion on that.

I’m really happy that you’re enjoying AnoHana; it’s got my vote for best anime of its class/genre this year. With just 11 eps to work with though, they had to skimp in places, which is understandable. They did a damn good job with what little time they had to tell Menma’s story. And, it gets better ;-)

Thanks for the cooking video; the scene does make more sense now LOL (+ proper slicing technique = win)!

I dunno about eating that pancake though… guess I’d have to go to Japan and have some kind young woman usher me through it :-D

Anaru is awesome, yep. Characters whom you dislike at first really do grow on you if developed properly; Shana and Taiga are two good examples. Next thing you know, they’re among your favorites!

I loved the direction in AnoHana; expression and body language especially. As I mentioned before, the scene where Jintan yells “Why would I like an ugly girl like that?” really struck me hard; the expression on Menma’s face was heartbreaking, yet it showed her disappointed acceptance in ways that words can’t convey. Magic of anime, and etc ;-)

Tomatsu did get a juicy plum of a role in playing Amaru; she was a great choice for the part. (btw, “admonish” means to scold, so I don’t think you wanted to chastise her!) You picked up on her excellence though, so you got the gist; I’m glad that you appreciate her!

I did watch Fractale, and enjoyed it much more than the critics did LOL (I’m a LOT more forgiving than they are anyway :-P ) I gave it an 8 (out of 10) due to plot inconsistencies and minor holes, but overall it was an enjoyable show. Visually rewarding, that’s for sure. Here’s my summary in an earlier post which has a video of the dazzling OP; apologies for all the other YT-deleted videos in it: http://unbound.org/wordpress/?p=681

I HIGHLY recommend watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but beware of spoilers ruining it. Marathon it! You’ll NEVER view Magical Girls in quite the same light… SHAFT-ness, what can I say? Incredible. You’ll find a live version of the powerful ED song “Magia” by Kalafina in the above linked post; all others of the anime have been yanked already. You’ve GOT to see this show! Gave it a 10 ;-)

I want one of each Kalafina, plz…

Speaking of tens, I’m rewatching Gosick at the moment; if you think you’d enjoy a mystery series set in 1920′s Europe with interesting (and fun!) characters and diverse settings, you might get a kick out of it. Victorica really grows as a character throughout, especially by the riveting final eps. WWW = Well Worth Watching :-D

(And look for eps by the “Victorique” subgroup; they actually spell Victorica’s name properly rather than the usual confusing “Victorique” usage in other group’s subs. Funny that they’d “immortalize” the mis-spelling by using it for their name LOL… “Victorique” may actually be the fansub group UTW under a different name, as I read on the Internet somewhere so it must be true :-P )

Enjoy your stuffs and please do let me know how you enjoyed them; feel free to comment when-and-wherever you’re inclined!

“(btw, “admonish” means to scold, so I don’t think you wanted to chastise her!)”

D’oh, curse my mixed up mind. I think somewhere in my skull the definition of “To remind of something forgotten or disregarded, as an obligation or a responsibility” popped up. But yeah, not the best choice of words. Bottom line, me likes Tomatsu. Daisuki desu!

“Characters whom you dislike at first really do grow on you if developed properly; Shana and Taiga are two good examples.”

Shana had me at “Your just a torch.” ;) You mention Taiga, but the character that spun me into a complete 180 was Ami. I hated that girl (and I’m talking “what a f**king bitch” kind of hate) in the beginning, but she totally won me over in the end. I don’t think I’ve since felt such a dramatic reversal of opinion as I did with her.

“I did watch Fractale, and enjoyed it much more than the critics did…”

Oh no, you did NOT just say that critics didn’t like it. Well, there’s my justifiable reason for checking it out. :D

Aaanyhow… It just so happens that my “budget brand” HDTV burned out after four years of (long) daily operation. So, I’m looking at my computer for entertainment for the near future, until I can save up for another TV (I don’t do credit these days).

Gosick ~ You know… a 1920s mystery sounds very interesting. I’ve recently discovered (well, before the TV went tits up) a PBS Masterpiece Mystery series involving the Agatha Christie character Hercule Poirot:
    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/poirot/index.html
Very enjoyable, if you’ve never seen it.

    I’ll give Gosick a go.

LOL… *I’m amusing myself here* When I threw out that “tits up” comment I suddenly remembered the 1988 OVA for Appleseed – anime based on characters of legendary designer Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). There’s a scene where Deunan Knute is complaining about something and the fansub I had has her saying, “You know what really twists my tits…”

Best. Line. Ever… for a female protag. :D The 2004 CGI film was fairly good, btw.

Ah, Ami; great example! Yeah, I couldn’t stand her either; it took me three re-watches until I cared enough to “get her”. As a general rule, I don’t like mean, cold and/or cruel tendencies in my anime heroines unless they make a BIG change in their attitudes and through their character growth over the course of a show, which Shana and Taiga both did so well in their series. Ami accomplished this in a more “honest” way, through solitary silent reflection and expression; we (the viewers) saw in her what the other characters did not: that she cared more deeply than she let on; she was not as self-absorbed as she projected early on (just a career-model LOL); and she wasn’t truly a malicious person. She won me over during the awesome Christmas episodes and with her duet with Taiga <3 -but it took awhile LOL

Matter of fact, you might've missed the little Toradora tribute I did at Christmastime! For some reason I didn't include Ami & Taiga's "Oh Holy Night"; I recall looking through several but didn't find one suitable, I guess, due to a spoiler. Which I've already spoiled by putting both their names in the same sentence LOL *sigh* But, I did find a subbed clip of "Taiga's Christmas" scene, which for me really cemented the Palmtop Tiger in my heart. Rie Kugimiya really hit her peak here. Probably one of my most favorite, moving, and memorable segments ever. It is spoilery though, but you've seen it already, so. Others who haven't seen it please be advised; it's not MAJOR spoilery, but… ;-) In the following Post, scroll down to the middle section and prepare to be choked up (again LOL): http://unbound.org/wordpress/?p=543

What made TD work was the depth of all of the characters; they were easy to relate to and sympathize with. Even Ami :-P Great show!

Regarding Fractale, enjoy it just for the ride, and don't take it as seriously as it does itself and you'll enjoy it fine. Plus, Nessa is so adorable!

Gosick I'm pretty sure you'll really like. Aside from a few early mini-arcs that proved light 'n' fluffy (but delivered some nice character intros and development) once it got going it really rolled. Victorica (aka "Victorique") proved to be one of the year's best characters, and at one point late in the series her emoting actually gave me chills! Which is awesome because Victorica is usually a very cool customer, but in that one scene her seiyuu, Aoi Yuuki, really cut loose :-O She also voiced Madoka of Puella Magi Madoka Magica which is another must-see from the Winter Season (it's alternative title is Mahou Shoujo Madoka (star) Magica). I've NEVER experienced something like that show! Imagine if Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha and Higurashi no Naku Korio Ni had a bastard child of a series, done by SHAFT/Shinbo. It's like that. Pretty much LOL

I'd heard of Appleseed and may check it out; thanks for the rec. I have a feeling that "twists my tits" was a fansubber's liberal liberty with the translation ;-)

I haven't had a TV in a couple of years, and aside from a baseball game here and there don't miss it in the least. Someday I'll have to get one though, so I can watch my DVDs on a large screen again :-D

And apologies for the correction; I was just concerned that an innocent Visitor might think that you had admonished poor Tomatsu when I was sure that it wasn't the case, 'cos I think you were the one who turned me onto her and her cute little music video of her dancing around in her room, remember that? (*idle thought*: …wonder why seiyuus are so often so cute…?)

I've been a bit busy (and sick) lately so haven't Posted much, but I'm about ready to recap the Spring Season soon, so stay tuned! Thanks for the Comment and Visitation :-)

I finished Anohana, with much dabbing of the eyes. Yeah, it was a bit cliche in the end, but it still delivered.

I dl’d Gosick but the files were bogus. Not sure what happened there.

Just watched the first episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Oh. My. Goodness!

What an amazing amalgamation of of Hidamari Sketch, Negima?!, Bakemanogatari, Nanoha and a nice spicy application of that Rosen Maiden N-feild-like-Le Portrait de Petit Cossette.

    Remember that, do you not?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQJi8EraOuw

Speaking of Tomatsu… I just did a (sentimental) search for that infamous Kanagi OP. I’m not seeing that original video anywhere. WTF!? Is it gone forever?

Sorry to hear you’ve been feeling sick. Get well soon, my friend. And keep on keepin’ on!

    WB DL :-)

I think AnoHana proves that if done well, even a cliche won’t appear as one unless looking for it. I try to just accept them as long as they’re not grievous LOL

I was still up posting the latest that I started at 7pm and it’s 3am now when I saw your comment and had to reply right away :-P Found a nice Anaru AMV that you now can watch since you finished the show (though no real big spoilers in it anyway). And now I can reveal The Name of the Flower That We Saw That Day! Or do you already know it? I’m gonna edit the post to insert its picture xD

That sucks about the Gosick subs… did you search for Victorique’s versions? I got them from A-T, if you remember that place, and they’re in HQ too.
[EDIT: It was just mentioned to me by a fansubber that StaticSubs' Gosick eps are far superior to anyone else's, so... word to the wise ;-) ]

LOL @ Madoka hook! betcha can’t stop watching now LMAO. Fasten your safety belt; that’s for DAMN sure. How do you like the ED, “Magia”? Nice, eh? Your amalgamation was spot-on too, but there will be another title that comes to mind later on but I won’t mention the name… *refrains from tipping off spoilers* It gets heavier and heavier…

Oh yeah; that Cossette theme is awesome (I bought the DVD)! It does remind me of Madoka a lot! Well, it’s by Yuki Kajiura who I think worked with Kalafina (who do Magia), so it’s no small wonder it’s equally sympathetic. Unless I’m wrong, which I could be LOL -too late to research it :-P

AWW… I thought you’d be able to find the Tomatsu vid, but I guess the copyright control freaks had it removed :-( Bastards!

Thanks for your comments and reportage :-)

“AWW… I thought you’d be able to find the Tomatsu vid…”

    Found it.
    http://my.opera.com/elalquimista/blog/kannagi-op

Quick! Grab it before the copyright nazis take it down (dirty bastards). I used the “DownloadHelper” add on for Firefox to safely swipe it away from the evil nutjobs who’s lives depend on depriving the rest of the world from the simple joy of artistic expression.

    Heheh…

Seriously… I can’t think of another OP that grabs you and slaps you to attention and INSTANTLY endears you to a lead female the way Kannagi does.

  11. DL said,

A follow up, because reminiscence is getting the best of me. ;)

    Kannagi OP…

The clear, sharp, but innocent vocals of Tomatsu,
    The funky slap bass,
    The punchy, yet melodic brass…

Combine that with the brilliance of good direction, professional Choreography, fantastic artwork, beautiful character design… not to mention the way that signiature short, white, pleated skirt delicately flirts with her thighs…

And you’ve got yourself one hell of an unforgettable OP.

Having said aaaalll thaaaat… I just went and listened to the full song for the first time.

Really. Good. Stuff. I highly encourage you to listen to it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN9cccgaVg0

It gives me new appreciation for Tomatsu. I’ve always held Nana Mizuki (Fate Testarossa… I have the “Live at Saitama Super Arena” DVD) in such high regard for her singing talent (first seiyuu to hit number one on the music charts), but I think Haruka has the same potential.

To think she landed her first leading role at the age of 17, probably still in high school at the time. Makes me think it’s worth staying interested in anime just to see where she is 10 years from now.

Do I need to mention that she’s reeaallyy CUTE!?

    http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s352/mushianime/tomatsu01.jpg

    *sigh*

  12. Rob said,

Thanks for the link to the Kannagi OP! It helped me to find the actual “live-action” Tomatsu video for it, which was the one I was looking for :-P
I thought you turned me on to it, but perhaps I found it on my own. Does this clip look familiar? (ALERT: Cuteness overload LOL)
    http://youtu.be/qQeG1-eleDY

*Minutes later* um… don’t go looking for Haruka-chan vids, ‘cos you’ll get… distracted. Esp. the live ones :-P This vid looks to be by the same director, as she basically is doing the same stuff, like that’s a bad thing! (See Alert above)
    http://youtu.be/pDtOMYOp67Q

Love the animation for the original anime of Kannagi too; the dancing is spot-on!

Yes, you mentioned that she is cute, but that’s okay ‘cos it’s very true xD

  13. DL said,

The Tomatsu vids are cute. Thanks for those.

But, I can’t help but feel the need to go Nana-fanboy on you.

I’ve watched many vids of seiyuu doing live performances of some of their songs, but I have yet to come across anyone who has the MASSIVE stage *presence* of Nana Mizuki. The energy she has, and that genuine, heartfelt rapport with her audience.

I was hoping to find a vid of her “Power Gate” (favorite song) that is on the DVD I have, to demonstrate this (they keep getting removed), but, I think I just found something that trumps even that. A VERY well done montage…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yuv3eoVAYNs&NR=1

Oh, to be an otaku in any one of those venues!

I’ve said it before in ‘other’ places, if I ever make a trip to Japan, it will be as a pilgramage to see Nana Mizuki live, on stage.

  14. Rob said,

    on July 17th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

Nice montage! Yes, Nana’s stage presence is legendary, and it’s as massive as her fanboy-base is LOL She *must* be #1 of all the Idols, but I don’t really know for sure. Definitely enjoyable to watch, although my eyeballs didn’t know where to look in that 5-screen montage LOL

    Thanks :-)

PS: In case you missed my Gosick Static Subs edit above; I heard that they were the best (and this from a rival fansub member LOL), so you may be better served looking for those, although I’m happy with Victorique’s subs. (And I guess Victorique fansub group conformed with the others and with ep 8 stopped spelling it as Victorica… *sigh*)

A completely non-anime thing, but, I honestly don’t where else to express this sentiment… Congratulations to Japan for winning the Women’s Soccer World Cup!

    http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20110718p2g00m0sp012000c.html

I was absolutely stunned by the video coming out of Japan during the March 11 tsunami. It almost brings tears to my eyes to read about this victory, even though it’s against my own country. They really deserve it.

    Sugoi!

Truly a well-deserved victory; congrats Japan!

Sorry if I go off in random directions at times.

As you may remember, I have mental health issues. It’s an embarrassing and awkward thing to admit, and deal with (lack of concentration, inability to focus, memory loss), but, that’s just reality for me.

Lately, I have become more interested in Japanese culture and society that is removed from anime.

Gonna’ throw one more thing at you. A photographer named Natsumi Hayashi. She was recently featured in the media for her “levitating” self-portraits. Really amazing work. She was quoted as saying, “Sometimes I have to jump more than 300 times to get the perfect shot.” Talk about determination!

Give the site a minute to load, I’ve noticed it can be a little slow, but so worth it.

    http://yowayowacamera.com/

Keep scrolling down and clicking the “next” link to see all the intriguing images that Natsumi has on her site.

  18. Rob said,

No apologies necessary; randomness yields sometimes fascinating results! Just like your Natsumi Hayashi site, which was pretty fascinating. Damn, 300 jumps for the perfect shot!?!?! And yet she never looks tired :-P

I was wondering how she keeps her hair from giving her “jump position” way; it’s obvious that she spends a lot of time and effort creating the ideal image. Thanks :-)

Anime really opened Japanese culture up for me, and I’ve been soaking up everything like a sponge. An interested sponge, to be sure! Though that damn language barrier sure is considerable…

Have you seen Danny Choo’s site? Very dedicated fellow, and entertaining as well! Oddly enough, it’s called “Culture Japan”, and is at http://www.dannychoo.com/

BTW, I edited your post for you to include the line you wanted in it from the follow up comment you sent, so it’s all good ;-)

Incidentally, I’ve got the same issues as those you mentioned and so can relate quite well. It’s a bitch to deal with, and few others are sympathetic since they don’t have first-hand knowledge. Hang in there! Thankfully, anime and music make a great one-two punch that can keep the depression at bay; at least they work for me! It’s the RL crap that gets to me LOL

Oh well… let’s keep on keepin’ on :-D

"When early youth had passed, he left his cold fireside and alienated home to seek strange truths in undiscovered lands. Many a wide waste and tangled wilderness has lured his fearless steps; and he has bought with his sweet voice and eyes, from savage men, his rest and food." (from 'Alastor, or, The Spirit of Solitude', by Percy Bysshe Shelley,1815)
